In recent years, Facebook has become synonymous with power and influence in the realm of social media. However, a new project called “The Facebook Receipts” aims to shine a harsh spotlight on the extent of the company’s ability to shape legislation and regulations in Washington, D.C. through its utilization of high-powered lobbyists.

Unveiling Facebook’s Influence
“The Facebook Receipts demonstrates the immense power of data. By compiling publicly available information and our own discoveries, we have uncovered compelling evidence that highlights Facebook’s strong influence in Washington, D.C.,” revealed Zamaan Qureshi, a young political prodigy and member of the Real Facebook Oversight Board.
Qureshi, who rose to prominence during the 2018 midterms by recognizing the role of social media in voter manipulation, joined forces with the Real Facebook Oversight Board following the establishment of Facebook’s own oversight board. Their collective mission was to expose how Big Tech lobbyists, including those working for Facebook’s parent company Meta, employ their power and influence to thwart significant antitrust legislation that would rein in Silicon Valley monopolies.
Uncovering the Truth
“During our investigation, we uncovered mounting evidence of the exorbitant sums of money spent by Big Tech,” Qureshi explained. “We wanted to tell the story of how Facebook, through its influence, dollars, and sophisticated machinery, managed to convince lawmakers that the proposed legislation was inadequate.”
Despite broad, bipartisan support for legislation favored by a majority of Americans, Qureshi’s group discovered that it was effectively derailed. Determined to find answers, they embarked on the Facebook Receipts project.
Last month, the findings of the Facebook Receipts were made public. The project, which boasts being the first publicly accessible, open-source research tool tracking Facebook’s court hearings, controversies, financial contributions, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filings, is regularly updated with new discoveries. Its ultimate goal is to create a comprehensive collection of original data and visualizations that shed light on the true extent of Facebook’s influence operations.
One of the most striking revelations was that Facebook made political donations to candidates in 49 out of the 50 states during both the 2020 and 2022 elections. These recipients spanned both the Republican and Democratic parties. Qureshi emphasized that Facebook’s ability to exert significant influence across party lines has become crucial in their efforts to counter legislation that could impact the company’s interests.
Facebook’s Double-Sided Narrative
“For years, Facebook has professed its desire for regulation and legislation. It has advocated for lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to establish clear rules and guidelines for tech companies,” Qureshi stated. “However, every time new legislation is proposed by Democrats or Republicans, it seems that Facebook is uninterested in collaborating with lawmakers or genuinely supporting any substantial regulation.”
Qureshi believes that Facebook’s actions indicate they are actively trying to use their influence to counter regulatory measures that could harm the company’s financial standing.
The Power of Lobbying
The Facebook Receipts also shed light on the extent of Facebook’s lobbying efforts. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, emerged as the top individual recipient of donations, receiving $10,000 from Meta’s corporate and employee contributions.
Additionally, the project traces Facebook’s global influence, identifies the number of Congress members on Facebook’s payroll, and exposes instances where Facebook has misled or deceived government officials. It also reveals the significant sums Facebook spent on political candidates during the 2020 and 2022 elections.
The Allegations of Monopoly
The project raises concerns of Facebook and other Big Tech giants engaging in monopolistic behavior and acquiring competitors to stifle competition. Qureshi argued that his team’s research has shown how Facebook exploits the revolving door concept, wherein individuals move between positions at powerful corporations, regulatory bodies, and lobbying firms. This practice perpetuates Facebook’s influence machine and enables the company to maintain its stronghold in the tech industry.
The Future of Facebook’s Influence
While Facebook’s substantial financial investments have yielded favorable results thus far, Qureshi does not expect their power and influence to remain unchallenged indefinitely.
“As I engage with colleagues in the advocacy space who are fighting against Big Tech, we often refer to Facebook as ‘delaying the inevitable,'” he explained. “Lawmakers are increasingly uniting around the need for regulation, gaining bipartisan support on this issue. Facebook currently allocates a significant portion of its expenditures to lobbying, and I believe this trend will continue due to the growing animosity towards Big Tech.”
Facebook’s Growing Challenge
However, Qureshi acknowledges that Facebook will need to allocate even greater financial resources to combat each new piece of legislation. He anticipates that although the company has successfully navigated the political landscape thus far, the increasing scrutiny and public attention will eventually erode their influence.
“Even if comprehensive regulation isn’t passed tomorrow, it is undoubtedly on the horizon,” Qureshi asserted. At the time of this article’s publication, Facebook had not responded to requests for comment regarding The Facebook Receipts. The project stands as a testament to the growing awareness and concern surrounding Facebook’s significant influence and lobbying practices, aiming to hold the social media giant accountable for its actions in the realm of politics and legislation
