In an exciting turn of events, Kate Middleton has assumed the esteemed position of Colonel of the Irish Guards, succeeding her husband Prince William. However, contrary to expectations, she will not be donning the uniform or partaking in the horseback procession at this weekend’s Trooping the Colour event.
Trooping the Colour is a highly anticipated annual parade and a key highlight of the royal calendar. This year, the event holds even greater significance. Not only will it mark King Charles’ inaugural birthday parade, but it will also serve as the Princess of Wales’ first appearance in her new military role.
Last year, Kate officially became the Colonel of the Irish Guards, a position previously held by Prince William. She has already carried out her colonel duties this year, including participating in the renowned St Patrick’s Day parade alongside the Irish Guards.
Traditionally, colonels participating in Trooping the Colour wear complete military regalia. Notable figures such as William and Princess Anne have even taken part in the procession on horseback. However, reports indicate that Kate will not be following suit. Instead, she will travel to Horse Guards Parade in a carriage, while both Charles and William are set to ride on horseback.
Last year, the Daily Mail reported that Kate was not expected to wear military attire for the parade, a sentiment that applies to Queen Camilla as well. Queen Camilla recently assumed the role of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, which was previously held by Prince Andrew before he was stripped of his royal titles. Similar to Kate, Queen Camilla is not anticipated to wear military uniform and will join the procession in a carriage.
Trooping the Colour has been the grand celebration of the monarch’s official birthday for over 260 years. This Saturday will mark King Charles’ debut appearance at the event as the reigning monarch, following his Coronation. The parade will feature over 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians, showcasing military precision, horsemanship, and fanfare.
The procession commences at Buckingham Palace, proceeding down The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, and concludes with a magnificent fly-past by the Royal Air Force.
Although Kate will not be wearing uniform during Trooping the Colour, she has been spotted in military attire on various occasions over the past year, engaging in different military engagements.
In a noteworthy visit to Pirbright Training Academy last year, Kate spent time with the 101 Operational Sustainment Brigade at Abingdon Airfield, familiarizing herself with the training methods for new recruits and serving personnel. She actively participated in training exercises, conversing with army personnel about their experiences in the British Army. Captured in photos, Kate can be seen with a smile as she tackles various training activities. She even ventured inside a tank and generously lent a hand in machinery repairs.
Furthermore, earlier this year, Kate braved freezing conditions on Salisbury Plain as she joined the Irish Guards for battlefield drills.
Kate Middleton’s role as Colonel of the Irish Guards and her involvement in military engagements showcase her dedication and support for the armed forces. While she may not be donning her uniform or riding on horseback during Trooping the Colour, her presence and commitment to the military community continue to be commendable.
